If you’re headed to Philadelphia for Digital Pharma East next week, you're in a prime position to take advantage of the city's incredible food scene. Loews Hotel Philadelphia, the conference venue, is within walking distance of countless quick meals and fine dining options alike. Whether you’re looking for BBQ, vegetarian, or something in between, Center City Philadelphia won’t disappoint. Here are a few of our favorite spots.
Foodies won’t want to miss Reading Terminal Market at 12th and Arch Streets. Opened in 1893, Philadelphia’s historic public market is home to a wide variety of restaurants, as well as merchants selling everything from locally grown produce to fresh meats and cheeses to flowers and handmade baked goods. Foodies won’t want to miss DiNic’s roast pork sandwich. Served on a seeded bun with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone, it was recently named “America’s Best Sandwich.” Reading Market is only a 2-min walk from Loews, so you can skip lunch in the exhibition hall and be back in time for the 2:00 presentation.
If you have a little extra time, check out Smokin’ Betty’s at 116 S 11th St. This is one of Philly’s favorite spots for BBQ and burgers. (And, many would add, a $5 happy hour.)
It’s a good idea to call ahead for reservations at these popular Philadelphia restaurants, but if you find yourself without, go ahead and give them a try. Bar seating may be available.
- Barbuzzo (110 S 13th St.) is a Mediterranean kitchen and bar with a rustic flair. Small plates are designed for sharing and include grilled octopus, grilled skirt steak, and Moroccan mussels. Wood-fired pizzas are another favorite.
- Fork (306 Market St.) offers contemporary American cuisine in a modern setting. Wednesday dinners feature a one-night-only, multiple course meal built around a central ingredient. The regular menu includes a raw bar, seafood, and hand-made pastas. Private dining is also available.
- Estia (1405 Locust St.) offers fantastic Greek food, in particular, whole grilled fish flown in from the Mediterranean. The restaurant is known for its ambience, which reflects the style of a typical Greek home. If you’re hosting a large group, Estia also has three private dining rooms.
- Vedge (1221 Locust St.) is a vegetarian restaurant for all types of foodies. Travel & Leisure named it the best farm-to-table restaurant in Pennsylvania and Wine Enthusiast recently included Vedge on its list of America’s 100 Best Wine Restaurants in America.
Late Night Snack
Only a college student could dream up something as great as late night delivery of warm, freshly baked cookies. That was in 2003 and now there are more than 90 Insomnia Cookies locations around the country. Fortunately, one of them is right around the corner from Loews. But don’t go out; order online until 3 a.m. daily.
See you in Philadelphia - come hungry!
